Presenting the startups – PlanM

To give you a chance to get to know all of the startups a bit better, we asked them some questions. Meet PlanM !

Starting at the base of every societal startup. What problem are you trying to solve?

Although only 40 % of Sweden’s population have access to a car, we have developed a car dependency in our cities. It is a problem. Especially when domestic transport represents almost one-third of Sweden’s total emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition, the transport resources contribute in the rise of health problems and inequality. In other words, it is a serie of problems linked to our everyday travel and the way we build our cities. We need to break the car dependency, from an environmental perspective but also from a health perspective and fairness.

How are you going to solve this? What is your idea?

PlanM is developing a method for property owners to use in the planning process in order to reduce car dependency. The work is about helping property owners to build houses and workplaces where it is equally sounded – or easier – to walk, cycle, use public transport or share a car to use their own. Studies show that 71% of employees in Skåne has access to free parking and that one with free parking use their car more. The way we build our properties thus affects the way we travel in everyday life. Reduced car dependency, lowered parking costs, increase the buildable area and create competitive districts.

What impact do you hope to have?

Reduction of CO 2 from traffic in the cities, better public health, a more equal transport system and of course more viable and walkable neighbourhoods.

Focusing more on your team. Who are you? What is your background?

I am an environmental scientist specializing in urban planning with 10 years of experience in mobility work in Lund Municipality. I am passionate about viable districts that are for everyone. In the municipality, I helped employers and property owners to reduce negative effect from transportation and have seen that it gave results.
I was also part of the team, together with my husband, that builded Sweden’s first byggemenskap, Urbana Villor, which has fueled my interest in sustainable cities.

Now a few weeks into the accelerator program. Why did you apply for SoPact? What have you learned so far that you want to share with other societal entrepreneurs?

I felt that the format for SoPact was perfect for a startup like mine. If you are driven by impact and are in a new field it is important to meet and learn from people in the same situation. SoPact seemed to be the right context for this kind of need and it is! I really appreciate that SoPact is based on the needs of each entrepreneur instead of “one fits all” approach. We learned about impact assessments, storytelling as a way of presenting your idea and business development by many things.

If I as a reader want to engage or help you reach your goals of impact. How can I do so? Is there any way to help at this stage?

There are definitely ways to help! We need to find smart, innovative solutions to reduce CO 2 from properties.
